Fatigue Test for Reliability of Fiber-Reinforced Nylon 46
Fiber-reinforced Nylon 46 is one of the derivatives of new material FRTP (Fiber-Reinforced Thermoplastics).
While conventional FRP is of thermosetting property (hardens when heated), FRTP is, on the other hand, of thermoplasticity (not hardens when heated), which is an epoch-making new material with advantages of such as high temperature resistant and easy to process.
Automobile engines of new generation are required to reduce physical size and weight.
Currently used alloys have limit to reduce the size. On the other hand, it is expected that FRTP will be used to reduce size and weight significantly with lower cost.
Photo 1 was obtained as a result of fatigue test of Fiber-Reinforced Nylon 46 test piece, with material tester of Electronic Oil Pressured Servo Type, as illustrated in Fig.1. In Photo 1, higher temperature portions in the test piece show the distortions caused during repeated loading test being performed with constant period of time.
With this experiment, this new material has being repeatedly examined to see the effects under various conditions for the research and development to turn new materials to practical use for vehicle engines.
